Join us May 7, 2025 as we embark on an unforgettable 1,000 mile journey over the next 40 days to support our heroes.
A Legacy of Distance
At 82 years young, Stan Cottrell embodies a life filled with remarkable adventures and achievements.
This celebrated ultra-distance runner has earned multiple entries in the Guinness Book of World Records, having journeyed across all five continents and explored numerous countries, including venturing into China’s restricted areas back in 1984.
Cottrell has successfully completed three 100-day coast-to-coast runs in the United States. His humanitarian efforts have garnered him both presidential and congressional honors, as well as recognition from global leaders. He proudly served in the Marine Corps.
Additionally, he is the author of several books, has been featured in countless documentaries, and participated in numerous media interviews. Yet, Cottrell shows no signs of retiring his running shoes.
And his commitment to giving back remains as strong as ever. As he prepares for his next monumental run, Stan inspires countless individuals, demonstrating that age is merely a number when it comes to passion and purpose. His journey is not just about miles covered, but about connections made, stories shared, and the lives touched along the way. With every step, he reminds us all of the power of resilience and the importance of standing up for those who have served our country.
Running for Veterans
On May 7, 2025, Cottrell will hit the roads to shine a light on the struggles faced by veterans battling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, suicide, and other mental health issues. This run, which traverses Georgia, marks yet another chapter in Cottrell's illustrious journey of ultramarathons that has spanned over forty years.
Raised in eastern Kentucky and now residing in Tucker, Ga., Cottrell found his passion for long-distance running at a young age. At just 12 years old, he clinched victory in a 100-yard dash barefoot at the county fair, earning a prized blue ribbon.
Since that defining moment, Cottrell — previously a CEO and executive at various firms — has continuously shattered the boundaries of what’s deemed achievable. His remarkable achievement of over 283,000 miles run — a world record in itself — includes remarkable feats such as:- 3,100 miles journey from Los Angeles to New York in 1980
- 2,125 miles across China, from The Great Wall to Guangzhou in 1984
- 6,000 miles traversed in Russia in 1992
- 150 miles run in Nairobi, Kenya in 2005
- 2,022 miles through Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee as part of the VET 22 Suicide Prevention Run, raising funds for the nonprofit VET 22, which honors the estimated 22 U.S. military veterans who tragically take their lives every day.
Cottrell, also a seasoned entrepreneur, college educator, coach, and pharmaceutical salesperson, initiated the Amazing Friendship Run through his nonprofit, the Friendship Sports Association. His inspiring journey is detailed in his books Thoughts on the Run and No Mountain Too High.
In His Own Words
"It’s important to raise awareness about a major problem we’re experiencing in America right now. Every day, an average of 22 veterans are committing suicide. These are the people who fought for us on the battlefields in foreign countries. They’re coming home, but the nightmare of what they’ve experienced is still with them. They’re having a hard time processing it. Back when I served in the Marine Corps, our motto was “Leave no man behind.” That’s still true. We must do everything we can to support our veterans. God has poured into me to give me these abilities. I’m using them to give back, to raise awareness about the challenges facing our veterans."
"We can never put limitations on what we’re capable of doing, no matter our age. We need to hold on to our dreams. A long time ago, I made it my mission to use my long-distance running to encourage people to discover their own gifts."
"Never in my wildest dreams did I think that running would take me all around the world … to places like Ethiopia, Scotland, Poland, Argentina, and Korea. Through running, I have had the privilege of meeting many incredible people from all walks of life, including students, farmers, and dignitaries. I am blessed."
